Provenance

Where it came from

Aladdin's Lamp was released in 1993 as part of Arabian Nights, the first expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the set was inspired by the classic collection of Middle Eastern folk tales, specifically the One Thousand and One Nights. The card was designed as a rare artifact that mechanically mirrors the wish-granting folklore, allowing players to pay mana to search their library for cards.

The card’s visual identity was crafted by artist Mark Tedin, one of the original illustrators for the game. Tedin’s approach focused on a mystical, high-fantasy aesthetic that captured the essence of the genie-in-a-bottle trope. While the card is often remembered for its unique utility in early gameplay, it is also noted for its distinctive artwork, which helped define the visual language of the game’s formative era during the early 1990s.
