Where it came from
Clandestine Chameleon was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity set, the fourth installment in Wizards of the Coast's 'Un-' series. These sets are distinct within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem for prioritizing humor, mechanical experimentation, and meta-commentary over standard competitive legality. The card reflects the set's carnival-inspired aesthetic, blending traditional fantasy tropes with a playful, neon-drenched art style.
The card was designed to interact with the 'sticker' mechanic, a central feature of Unfinity that allowed players to temporarily modify card names, abilities, and power-toughness stats using physical adhesive labels. Illustrators for the set were tasked with creating vibrant, whimsical character portraits that captured the surreal atmosphere of the intergalactic amusement park setting, with this specific design focusing on the themes of disguise and hidden identity common to the 'un-sets'.
