Where it came from
Cleansing Nova was released in 2018 as part of the Commander 2018 set for Magic: The Gathering, specifically featured in the Exquisite Invention deck. The card was designed as a versatile board-clearing tool that allows players to choose between destroying all creatures or all artifacts and enchantments, providing strategic flexibility common in white-aligned control decks. Its introduction reflected the game's evolving design philosophy to provide modal spells that remain useful across different stages of a multiplayer match.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Johannes Voss. Known for his ethereal and high-fantasy aesthetic, Voss intended to capture the sensation of a magical purification event, utilizing brilliant light and sharp geometric energy to define the 'nova' effect. The card was received positively by the community, primarily for its efficiency as a board wipe that offers players agency in a format where board states are frequently complex and cluttered.
