Provenance

Where it came from

Cleansing Nova was first released in the 2018 Commander set, designed as a versatile board-clearing tool for the popular multiplayer Magic: The Gathering format. It was crafted to provide players with a choice between destroying all creatures or all artifacts and enchantments, offering tactical flexibility that balances board states during long-form games. The card exemplifies the white-aligned philosophy of maintaining order through symmetrical destruction.

The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a luminous, ethereal aesthetic to capture the transformative power of a nova. Voss sought to emphasize the card's theme of purification rather than simple demolition, using soft lighting and divine imagery to contrast with the inherent violence of a board wipe. It has since become a staple inclusion in many white-inclusive Commander decks due to its efficiency and the strategic agency it affords players.
