Where it came from
Clear was released in 1998 as part of Urza's Saga, the first set in the Urza Block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set is historically significant for shifting the game's focus toward powerful enchantments and artifacts, following the lore of the artificer Urza. The set was designed during a period of rapid expansion for the game, reflecting a shift toward more complex mechanics that defined late 1990s playstyles.
The card's illustration was crafted by artist Rob Alexander, whose work is characterized by expansive, atmospheric landscapes and a painterly approach to fantasy environments. For this piece, Alexander aimed to capture the ethereal quality of the spell's effect, focusing on clarity and light within a magical setting. While Clear is considered a niche card within the broader Urza's Saga collection, it remains a notable example of the aesthetic standards established by the design team during this formative era of the game.
