Where it came from
Clear the Stage was released in early 2019 as part of the Ravnica Allegiance set, a pivotal chapter in the long-running Return to Ravnica block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the mechanics of the Orzhov Syndicate, focusing on the guild's signature blend of removal and afterlife synergy, which allowed players to exile creatures while gaining value from their own fallen units.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Kieran Yanner, who captured the grim, liturgical aesthetic of the Orzhov. Yanner utilized a high-contrast style that emphasizes the ornate, gothic architecture of Ravnica, aiming to convey the sense of finality and cold bureaucratic judgment that defines the Orzhov's influence on the city-plane. The card was received by the player base as a functional, if situational, removal tool that fit well within the limited format of the set.
