Provenance

Where it came from

Clockwork Beast was released in 1994 as part of the Revised Edition of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. As one of the core sets that helped solidify the game's early rules and mechanics, it functioned as a reprint of cards from the Limited Edition Alpha and Beta sets. The card reflects the early aesthetic of the game, where the artifact creature subtype was still being defined as a versatile, colorless tool for players regardless of their deck's color identity.

The artwork was provided by Drew Tucker, one of the original illustrators for the game. Tucker is well-regarded for his unique, impressionistic watercolor style, which stood in contrast to the high-fantasy digital art that would eventually dominate later sets. His depiction of the Clockwork Beast captures a clunky, mechanical essence, aligning with the creature's gameplay function of losing power counters each turn as it winds down.
