Provenance

Where it came from

The Clockwork Beast was released as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering in 1993. As one of the original artifacts in the game, it was designed to showcase the early mechanical theme of colorless creatures that could grow in power at the cost of vulnerability. This set served as the second print run of the game, following the limited Alpha release, and was intended to satisfy the rapidly growing demand from early players and hobbyists.

The card features artwork by Drew Tucker, a prominent early contributor whose distinct, watercolor-influenced style helped define the aesthetic of Magic's first year. Tucker's illustration depicts a brass-colored construct with a haunting, skeletal visage, fitting the game's high-fantasy industrial tone. While the card is often remembered for its unique power-scaling mechanic, its design represents the experimental nature of early game development, focusing more on thematic flavor than the rigorous balance standards established in later expansions.
