Where it came from
Closing Statement is a card from the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Strixhaven: School of Mages, which revolves around a magical university setting divided into five unique colleges. This card belongs to the Silverquill college, an institution focused on the power of rhetoric, ink magic, and the battlefield application of words. It was designed to reflect the dramatic culmination of a debate or a high-stakes academic confrontation, utilizing a black-and-white visual motif that defines the Silverquill aesthetic.
The artwork was created by illustrator Randy Vargas, who focused on capturing the authoritative nature of the card's effect. In the context of the game's mechanics, the card serves as a board-clearing spell that forces a player to sacrifice their most powerful creature while punishing the opponent for their board state. The card was received by the player base as a flavorful representation of the set's theme, praised for its thematic cohesion and utility within the Orzhov-colored decks of the expansion.
