Where it came from
Close Quarters was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced players to the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its complex mercantile culture and steampunk-adjacent aesthetics. The card functions as an enchantment, specifically designed to reward players for aggressively deploying creature spells during combat sequences.
The artwork for Close Quarters was created by artist Christopher Rush, a foundational illustrator in the early history of the game. His design utilizes a high-contrast style that emphasizes the chaotic nature of urban skirmishes on the plane of Mercadia. At the time of its release, the card was received as a niche tactical tool, primarily valued by players exploring the intricacies of the set's unique mechanics rather than competitive tournament play.
