Where it came from
Clown Car was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering, a set designed to celebrate a science-fiction carnival theme while experimenting with silver-bordered design sensibilities in a black-bordered context. As an artifact vehicle, it serves as a humorous nod to the classic trope of clowns emerging from an impossibly small vehicle, mechanically represented by its ability to scale in power based on the amount of mana spent to cast it.
The card was illustrated by Bryan Sola, who captured the chaotic, whimsical aesthetic of the Un-sets through vibrant colors and dynamic perspective. Within the Magic community, the design was noted for its clever integration of flavor and function, particularly how it interacts with die-rolling mechanics, cementing its status as a memorable inclusion in a set specifically crafted for playgroup levity and unconventional interactions.
