Where it came from
Coastal Discovery was released in 2015 as part of the Battle for Zendikar set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set marked a return to the plane of Zendikar, a world defined by its volatile environment and the existential threat of the Eldrazi titans, which necessitated a visual and mechanical focus on exploration and survival. The card was designed to highlight the 'Awaken' mechanic, allowing players to turn lands into creatures, reflecting the land of Zendikar itself fighting back against the encroaching devastation.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Christine Choi, who captures the ethereal and hazardous beauty of the Zendikar landscape. Choi’s design emphasizes the bioluminescent and jagged terrain characteristic of the plane, aiming to evoke a sense of wonder mixed with the immediate urgency of exploration. The piece was well-received for its atmospheric lighting and adherence to the set’s broader aesthetic, serving as both a functional tool in the game’s limited environment and a narrative window into the world’s ongoing struggle.
