Coastal Breach

Coastal Breach was released in November 2016 as part of the Commander 2016 expansion, a set designed to support the four-color commander archetypes introduced in that cycle. It was featured specifically in the Open Hostility deck, providing players with a strategic board-wipe effect tailored to the multiplayer dynamics of the Commander format. The card functions as a blue sorcery that returns all nonland permanents to their owners' hands, but notably costs less to cast if a player controls a commander, rewarding the deck's central focus.

The card's illustration was created by artist Daarken, known for his dark and visceral aesthetic within the Magic: The Gathering catalog. For this piece, the artist captured the chaotic, surging power of the sea, aiming to evoke a sense of overwhelming force that fits the mechanical identity of a mass-bounce spell. Upon its release, Coastal Breach was well-received by the Commander community for its scaling efficiency, becoming a staple utility card for blue-aligned decks that prioritize tempo control over permanent destruction.
