Coat of Arms was originally introduced in the 1999 expansion set Urza's Destiny, designed as an artifact that grants a power-scaling buff based on the number of creatures sharing a creature type. Its inclusion in the 2010 Duels of the Planeswalkers set served to bring a classic, high-impact card to a new generation of players interacting with Magic: The Gathering through digital platforms. The card is celebrated for its ability to dramatically accelerate tribal decks, turning otherwise modest armies into overwhelming forces.

The artwork for the original release was created by Greg Staples, whose illustrative style emphasizes a sense of history and heraldic grandeur.
