As one of the most iconic creatures from the blue color identity, it was designed to serve as a powerful late-game finisher, utilizing its combination of significant power and evasion to dominate the board state in early casual play. The card's enduring presence in core sets during the 1990s cemented its status as a quintessential example of the game's original power scaling.

The original illustration was created by Jesper Myrfors, the game’s first art director, who utilized a moody, atmospheric aesthetic that defined the visual language of early Magic.
