Provenance

Where it came from

Cold Storage was originally released in the Tempest expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1997. Designed by Mike Elliott, the card was part of a set defined by the 'buyback' mechanic, which allowed players to return spells to their hand for reuse. The card reflects the set's gothic, shipwreck-themed aesthetic and provided a unique defensive utility by exiling creatures from the battlefield to be returned later.

The artwork was illustrated by rk post, a prolific artist in the game's history known for his distinctively dark and surreal style. His contribution to Cold Storage features the signature atmospheric tension characteristic of late-90s Magic cards. While it was not a centerpiece of competitive play during its initial release, the card remains a notable artifact from a formative era of the game's expansion design and illustration history.
