Provenance

Where it came from

Call the Scions was originally released as a common card in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering set Battle for Zendikar. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the card was intended to capture the mechanical flavor of the Eldrazi—an otherworldly, parasitic race—by allowing players to create Eldrazi Scion tokens that could be sacrificed for mana. This mechanic was a core feature of the set, emphasizing the Eldrazi's influence over the landscape of the plane of Zendikar.

The card features artwork by Chris Rahn, who depicted the call to service of the plane's inhabitants. Within the community, the card is recognized for its functional utility in limited formats, where its versatility as both a ramp tool and a chump blocker served as a bridge between early-game setup and the deployment of larger, more expensive Eldrazi threats. It later appeared on The List, a curated selection of cards from Magic's history that occasionally appear in Set Boosters, allowing newer players to encounter classic mechanics from the game's past.
