Where it came from
Comet Storm first appeared in the Worldwake expansion in 2010, designed as a powerful rare red sorcery that features a multikicker mechanic. The card was created during a period where Wizards of the Coast was emphasizing high-impact spells that could scale throughout a game, allowing players to dump excess mana into a singular, devastating effect. Its inclusion in the 2017 Commander Anthology product signaled its status as a staple for multiplayer formats, where its ability to target multiple opponents made it a recurring favorite for red-aligned decks.
The original illustration by Steve Argyle captures the chaotic, explosive nature of a comet impacting a landscape, utilizing vibrant oranges and deep purples to convey raw magical energy. Argyle, a prolific artist in the Magic: The Gathering community, leaned into an action-oriented composition that emphasizes the sheer force of the spell. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a definitive red finisher, praised by players for its flexibility and tactical utility in the burgeoning Commander format.
