Where it came from
Commencement of Festivities is a common green card released in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering set, Kaladesh. The set was designed to evoke an optimistic, steampunk-inspired world focused on invention and artifice. This specific card represents a moment of celebration within the city of Ghirapur, capturing the vibrant and communal nature of the Aether-rich society established by the design team to contrast with the darker themes of previous sets.
The illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who depicted a bustling market scene filled with festive energy. The visual direction aimed to emphasize the scale and color palette of the Kaladesh plane, using warm lighting and intricate architectural details to reinforce the set’s central motif of brilliant, high-energy craftsmanship. Upon its release, it was regarded as a functional utility card within the Limited format, appreciated for its thematic contribution to the set's immersive world-building.
