Where it came from
Commodore Guff first appeared as a legendary planeswalker in the 2023 Commander Masters set, specifically created for the Planeswalker Party preconstructed deck. The character has a long-standing history in the Magic: The Gathering lore, originating from the Weatherlight Saga as a historian who obsessed over the history of the Multiverse and possessed the ability to manipulate reality through his notes. His inclusion in this set serves as a narrative anchor for fans of the late 1990s and early 2000s storyline.
The card was designed to reflect Guff's thematic role as a chronicler and a catalyst for chaos. Illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, the artwork captures the character’s eccentric and studious nature, leaning into a whimsical yet powerful aesthetic that separates him from the more solemn planeswalkers in the game. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its unique ability to generate tokens and reward players for casting other planeswalkers, effectively bringing the flavor of his lore to the tabletop game.
