Where it came from
Commodore Guff was released in 2023 as part of the Commander Masters set, specifically appearing within the Planeswalker Party preconstructed deck. The character originates from Magic: The Gathering's deep lore, having first appeared in the 1990s as a powerful and eccentric planeswalker who served as the historian of the multiverse. This card represents a modern mechanical tribute to his storied role in the original Weatherlight Saga, designed to interact specifically with planeswalker-themed strategies.
The card was illustrated by artist Donato Giancola, who is well-regarded for his atmospheric and character-driven fantasy art. The design team focused on creating a card that captures Guff's persona as a scholarly observer who occasionally interferes with reality. It was received favorably by players who enjoy 'chaos' or 'political' style gameplay in the Commander format, as his abilities allow for unique deck-building opportunities centered around planeswalkers and direct damage.
