Where it came from
Concession Stand was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a card within the 'Un-' series, it was designed to break conventional rules of play by introducing elements of humor and mechanical interactions that would be impossible in traditional competitive sets. The design team, led by Mark Rosewater, aimed to blend the whimsical atmosphere of an intergalactic carnival with the established strategic depth of the trading card game.
The card's illustration, credited to artist Svetlin Velinov, leans into the retro-futuristic aesthetic of the set's central theme. The artwork was crafted to capture the busy, colorful essence of a snack kiosk positioned in a space-themed amusement park. Upon release, it was noted for its use of the 'sticker' mechanic, which allowed players to modify their cards during play, a concept that pushed the boundaries of physical interaction within the game.
