Where it came from
Confront the Past was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card belongs to the lore of the Prismari College, one of the five magical houses at the Strixhaven University, which emphasizes the fusion of elemental forces and creative expression. Mechanically, it reflects the college's focus on casting impactful spells and recurring powerful effects from the graveyard.
The card’s visual design, illustrated by artist Igor Kieryluk, depicts a mage manipulating swirling ink and magical energy to manifest spectral memories. The aesthetic adheres to the set's established theme of high-fantasy academia, blending traditional sorcery with the artistic motifs inherent to the Prismari identity. Upon its release, the card was integrated into various Commander and Standard formats, where players utilized its utility to retrieve key cards from their discard piles.
