Conservator

The Conservator card originates from the 30th Anniversary Edition of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, released in 2022. This set was designed as a high-end celebration of the game’s three-decade history, featuring reprints of iconic and sentimental cards from across the game's lifespan. By utilizing the classic original art style alongside a modernized border, Wizards of the Coast intended to bridge the gap between long-time veterans who played during the game's early 1990s inception and newer collectors interested in the game's historical lineage.

Originally appearing in the 1994 Antiquities expansion, Conservator was illustrated by artist Dameon Willich. The design reflects the 'artifact' theme central to the early expansions, which drew inspiration from archaeological discovery and clockwork engineering. While the card is often viewed as a niche mechanical utility in competitive play, it remains a beloved relic of the game's formative period. The 30th Anniversary reprinting honors the original aesthetic while serving as a commemorative piece for players reflecting on the game's evolutionary aesthetic and mechanical identity.
