Where it came from
Natural Selection was originally released as a green rare enchantment in the 1994 Magic: The Gathering expansion set, Legends. Designed during the game's nascent period, the card reflects the experimental mechanics of early Magic, where designers were exploring how deck manipulation and library interaction could function within the color pie. The artwork, provided by Sandra Everingham, features a surreal, illustrative style characteristic of the mid-1990s aesthetic that helped define the game's early identity.
The 30th Anniversary Edition, released in 2022, serves as a commemorative tribute to the history of the trading card game. This version of Natural Selection maintains the original illustration and text, printed with a specialized frame and back design to distinguish it from the original tournament-legal printings. It was intended primarily for collectors and fans of the game's formative years, serving as a nostalgic window into the card designs that shaped the early competitive and casual landscape.
