Consume Spirit

Consume Spirit was originally printed in the Dark set before appearing in the 2009 Planechase release as card number 21. As a staple black sorcery in Magic: The Gathering, the card serves as both a removal spell and a method of lifegain, reflecting the core thematic identity of the color black in the game’s color pie. Its inclusion in Planechase was intended to bolster the resource management and attrition-based strategies common in the supplemental multiplayer format.

The art for this version was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the game's most iconic early contributors. Rush’s style often leaned into the visceral, gothic fantasy aesthetic that defined the formative years of the game. By depicting a soul-draining energy, the illustration aims to visually communicate the card's mechanical function of transferring life from an opponent to the player, maintaining a consistent dark fantasy tone that has become synonymous with the game's classic era.
