Consume Spirit

Consume Spirit was originally printed in Mirrodin and subsequently featured in the Ninth Edition core set, which arrived in 2005. As a core set card, it was designed to serve as a staple black sorcery, providing players with a recurring method to drain life from opponents while removing threats. Its inclusion in Ninth Edition was part of a broader strategy to maintain key mechanics within the modern era of the game, ensuring that players had access to consistent resource management tools.

The art for this specific printing was created by Glen Angus, a prolific illustrator known for his distinct, atmospheric style within the fantasy genre. Angus utilized high-contrast shadows and haunting figures to emphasize the draining effect described in the card's rules text. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its versatility in limited formats, where its ability to scale in power as the game progressed made it a highly valued inclusion in any black-aligned deck.
