What it does

Consuming Aberration's power and toughness are each equal to the number of cards in your opponents' graveyards.

Whenever you cast a spell, each opponent reveals cards from the top of their library until they reveal a land card, then puts those cards into their graveyard.

Provenance

Where it came from

Consuming Aberration was released in 2013 as part of the Gatecrash expansion for Magic: The Gathering. It belongs to the Dimir guild, a faction defined by their mastery of espionage and psychological manipulation. The card mechanics, which allow players to exile cards from an opponent's library based on the mana cost of spells cast, were designed to reflect the guild's theme of memory erasure and mental infiltration.

The card’s striking visual identity was crafted by veteran fantasy illustrator Karl Kopinski. Working within the gritty, gothic urban aesthetic of the Ravnica plane, Kopinski depicted the creature as a towering, multi-limbed nightmare draped in shadows and tattered robes. The art was well-received by players for its ability to convey the card's disruptive, overwhelming presence on the battlefield, solidifying its status as a staple for mill-strategy Commander decks.
