Contagion

Contagion was included in the World Championship Decks 1997, a special boxed product released by Wizards of the Coast to commemorate the Magic: The Gathering World Championships. This set allowed players to purchase exact replicas of the decks used by the top eight finalists, providing a snapshot of the competitive metagame from that era. The card itself, originally from the Alliances expansion, was utilized in these decks for its ability to manipulate creature toughness and stall opponents during pivotal moments in match play.

The card features artwork by Margaret Organ-Kean, whose work in the 1990s helped define the dark, atmospheric aesthetic of early Magic sets. The design focused on the mechanical theme of cumulative upkeep and resource management, reflecting the strategic complexity encouraged by the development team at the time. When released as part of the championship series, the cards were printed with unique gold-bordered backs and specific deck-identifier signatures to distinguish them from standard tournament-legal cards, serving as a functional piece of competitive history rather than for use in sanctioned play.
