Where it came from
Contagion was released as part of the Deckmasters set in 2001, a collaborative collection published by Wizards of the Coast. The set was designed as a curated exhibition of the most iconic and mechanically significant cards from the earlier history of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, serving as a prestige retrospective for long-term players and collectors.
The artwork for this particular card was created by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and recognizable contributors to the game's early visual identity. His illustration style for Contagion sought to capture the visceral and spreading nature of its namesake, utilizing high-contrast imagery that became a hallmark of the set's effort to blend game utility with classic fantasy aesthetic.
