Where it came from
Coppercoat Vanguard was released in the 2023 Magic: The Gathering set March of the Machine: The Aftermath. This set was designed to serve as an epilogue to the expansive multi-set Phyrexian invasion storyline, focusing on the immediate aftermath of the war and the shifting power dynamics across the multiverse. As a creature card representing a Human Soldier, it emphasizes the communal recovery efforts on the plane of Thalia’s home.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the stoic, protective nature of the Vanguard amidst the rebuilding efforts following the devastation of the invasion. It was mechanically designed to provide a tribal lord effect for Human decks, offering ward to other Humans to reflect the defensive, rebuilding themes inherent to the card's narrative role in the story.
