Where it came from
Coppercoat Vanguard was released in 2023 as part of March of the Machine: The Aftermath, a micro-set designed to bridge the narrative gap between the conclusion of the Phyrexian invasion storyline and future expansions. The card depicts a member of the Coppercoats, the elite military forces of Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, tasked with rebuilding and securing the city of Thraben following the devastation caused by the war.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a cinematic, high-fantasy style to emphasize the Vanguard’s role as a protective leader for Human tribal decks. By providing a ward ability and a power boost to other Humans, the design was explicitly crafted to support aggressive white-aligned creature decks, leading to its widespread adoption in the Commander format upon its release.
