Where it came from
The Copy token was introduced as part of the Lorwyn Eclipsed Commander Token series, designed to support mechanics involving token generation and mimicry within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. These tokens were created to provide players with a clear, physical representation of effects that create exact duplicates of permanents already on the battlefield, reflecting the set's thematic focus on shifting identities and the surreal atmosphere of the plane of Lorwyn.
The artwork for these tokens was commissioned to align with the distinct, whimsical yet occasionally unsettling aesthetic that defined the Lorwyn block. Illustrators working on these assets aimed to bridge the gap between functional utility and the high-fantasy visual language of the game, resulting in an aesthetic that is widely appreciated for its cohesive integration into the broader set design and its immediate readability during tabletop play.
