Where it came from
The Copy token was introduced as part of the Secrets of Strixhaven promotional set, released in 2021 as a tie-in to the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were designed to represent the various magical effects and summoned entities specific to the set’s university-themed mechanics, reflecting the high-fantasy aesthetic of the plane of Strixhaven.
The artwork for this series was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to emphasize the distinct visual styles of the five magical colleges. The Copy token specifically serves a functional role in gameplay, allowing players to track objects that have been duplicated during a match. The design prioritizes clarity and thematic consistency with the wider Strixhaven art direction, which leans heavily into academic mysticism and spellcasting iconography.
