Where it came from
Copycrook was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed for a set that emphasizes high-power, complex mechanics and nostalgia for iconic playstyles, this card belongs to a cycle of creatures that utilize the mimicry and transformation themes central to blue-aligned cards in the set. It was crafted by Wizards of the Coast as a versatile tool for draft environments and constructed formats, allowing players to replicate the abilities of other creatures already on the battlefield.
The artwork, illustrated by Billy Christian, draws upon the whimsical yet slightly sinister aesthetic often associated with shapeshifting creatures in the game’s multiverse. Christian’s design captures the essence of a deceptive entity preparing to adopt a new form, utilizing a color palette and lighting style that aligns with the set's polished, high-fantasy visual identity. Upon release, the card was noted by players for its efficiency and potential utility in competitive play, particularly as a scalable piece of interaction.
