Copy Artifact

Copy Artifact was released in 1993 as part of the inaugural Magic: The Gathering Limited Edition Alpha set. Designed by Richard Garfield and illustrated by Amy Weber, the card was conceptualized during the game's formative development to explore the mechanical possibilities of blue mana, specifically the ability to replicate the utility of other artifacts on the battlefield. It emerged from a period when the game's rules were still being refined, resulting in a unique, low-cost enchantment that has since become a cornerstone of vintage deck building.

Amy Weber's illustration captures the ethereal, surrealist aesthetic that defined much of the early Alpha artwork. Her design focuses on a spectral, mirror-like duplication process, aligning with the card's intent to provide players with a versatile tool for board state control. While initially part of a broad and experimental pool of early cards, Copy Artifact eventually gained significant acclaim among players for its efficiency, earning a permanent place in the history of the game as one of its most iconic and strategically influential early enchantments.
