Where it came from
The Cordyceps Infected card was released in 2024 as part of the Secret Lair x The Last of Us drop, a collaborative set between Wizards of the Coast and Naughty Dog. This release was designed to coincide with the broader cross-media popularity of the franchise, integrating the aesthetic of the series' fungal-mutated enemies into the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering. The card itself is a functional reprint of the card 'Corpsejack Menace,' chosen specifically to mirror the parasitic and growth-oriented nature of the Cordyceps fungus within the game's lore.
The visual design of the card features artwork by an illustrator tasked with capturing the iconic, unsettling look of the Infected from the video game series. The art direction emphasizes the grotesque, organic structures associated with the Cordyceps infection, aiming to provide fans with a collectible that feels authentic to the source material's tone. Upon its release, the drop was received primarily by fans of the franchise as a niche aesthetic expansion, appreciated for its thematic commitment to the horror elements of the game.
