Where it came from
The Squirrel Mob card was released in 2021 as part of the '90s Binder Experience' Secret Lair drop, a specialized collection by Wizards of the Coast designed to evoke the aesthetic of early Magic: The Gathering trading card culture. This card is a reprint of an iconic creature card from the 2001 Odyssey expansion, reimagined with a distinct, nostalgic visual style that mirrors the playful, low-fi art sensibilities common in the hobby's formative years.
The illustration was crafted to lean into the whimsical nature of the Squirrel tribal theme, utilizing a bright, retro-inspired color palette and a composition that feels intentionally pulled from a vintage hobbyist's collection. The design was received by the player base as a deliberate exercise in community nostalgia, serving as both a functional game piece and a collectible homage to the quirky, unconventional creature types that have defined the game's long-term identity.
