Where it came from
Corpse Explosion was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna set in 2022, a Magic: The Gathering expansion inspired by the aesthetic of 1920s Art Deco and urban organized crime. This specific card, bearing collector number 179p, is a promotional variant that features unique showcase-style artwork intended to evoke the gilded, industrial decadence of the setting's metropolis.
The card’s design reflects the brutal utility of the Grixis-aligned Maestros, a vampire-led syndicate within the game’s narrative. The illustration, created by artist Magali Villeneuve, captures the dramatic, high-contrast style characteristic of the set's showcase frames. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its thematic consistency with the crime-thriller genre and its functional role as a versatile board-clearing effect in competitive play.
