Where it came from
Corpse Explosion was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set is themed around a 1920s-inspired art deco metropolis ruled by five demonic crime families, and this specific card represents the brutal, efficient methods of the Grixis-aligned Maestros family, who specialize in assassination and the macabre.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who aimed to capture the visceral and dark aesthetic of the Maestros guild. The artwork depicts a burst of magical energy consuming a target, aligning with the card's mechanical function of destroying a creature and dealing damage based on its power, a design intended to provide players with a high-impact, thematic board-clearing tool.
