Where it came from
Corpses of the Lost, numbered 98s, was released as part of the promotional suite for the 2023 Magic: The Gathering set, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. The card was designed to highlight the set's exploration of underground, subterranean environments, building upon the established themes of the Ixalan plane while introducing new mechanics centered around graveyard recursion and treasure tokens.
The illustration was crafted to evoke a sense of damp, forgotten history within the depths of the cavern, utilizing a muted, eerie palette typical of the set's darker aesthetic shifts. As a promotional variant, the card features unique frame treatments intended to appeal to collectors focused on the thematic identity of the set, and it was generally well-received by the player base for its functional synergy within black-aligned deck archetypes.
