Where it came from
The Costume Closet card is a component of the 1993 Marvel Super Heroes Commander card game, a trading card-based strategy title produced by Impel Marketing. Released during a period of immense growth for the superhero card market, the set was designed to mimic the mechanics of traditional role-playing and board games, offering players a way to interact with the vast Marvel comic canon beyond simple character stats.
The game featured illustrations pulled from the rich archives of Marvel Comics, emphasizing the vivid, high-contrast aesthetic that defined 1990s comic book art. The Costume Closet card serves as an item card within the deck, representing the thematic utility of various hero ensembles. While the set received moderate attention from collectors during the mid-90s trading card boom, it remains a nostalgic piece of Marvel ephemera that captures the era's focus on immersive, multifaceted tabletop card experiences.
