Where it came from
Costume Shop is a card from the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Unfinity, released by Wizards of the Coast. As part of a silver-bordered-adjacent set designed for casual, humor-infused gameplay, the card leans into the carnival and space-station aesthetic that defines the set's unique visual identity. The card was created to provide a mechanical way for players to utilize the set's sticker mechanic, encouraging a playful interaction with the board state that is characteristic of Un-sets.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature ethereal and detailed style to depict a bustling, imaginative storefront within the Unfinity universe. The design intent was to bridge the gap between functional game mechanics and the whimsical, immersive storytelling of a magical space carnival. Upon release, the set was received as a bold experiment in incorporating legacy-legal cards alongside traditional Un-set mechanics, with cards like Costume Shop serving as a centerpiece for the set's interactive, sticker-based design philosophy.
