Provenance

Where it came from

The Counterargument card was released in 1995 as part of the Marvel Super Heroes Jumpstart set, a trading card game designed to introduce younger players to the world of Marvel comics through accessible, simplified mechanics. Developed by Fleer, the game utilized iconic comic book imagery to represent tactical actions, with Counterargument functioning as a defensive reaction card that allowed players to negate an opponent's move.

The card features dynamic illustration consistent with the house style of 1990s Marvel editorial art, focusing on high-contrast action and bold character framing. It served as a functional utility piece in the game's broader meta-strategy, balancing the power of offensive cards while reinforcing the thematic concept of heroes reacting to villainous schemes. It remains a nostalgic touchstone for collectors of 90s era Marvel ephemera.
