Where it came from
Courier Griffin was released in 2015 as part of the Battle for Zendikar set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set returned to the plane of Zendikar, focusing on the conflict between the local inhabitants and the reality-warping Eldrazi titans. As a common card, it was designed to support the Limited gameplay environment, providing a functional, mid-game flying creature that rewarded players for interacting with the set's landfall mechanics.
The card features artwork by Lake Hurwitz, who chose to depict the creature as a majestic, avian-feline hybrid amidst the surreal landscape of Zendikar. The design aimed to capture the theme of a swift, airborne scout traversing the shifting, gravity-defying terrain of the plane. It was received by the player base as a standard-issue inclusion for draft decks, valued primarily for its role as a reliable, aggressive flying threat rather than for its competitive constructed playability.
