Where it came from
Courier Bat originated as a common creature card in the Innistrad: Crimson Vow set, released in late 2021. It was later included in the Innistrad: Double Feature set, a specialty release that combined cards from both Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow into a single, monochromatic aesthetic experience. This specific version was created to celebrate the gothic horror themes of the Innistrad plane, employing a unique, high-contrast black-and-white art style meant to evoke the look of classic silver-screen horror films.
The card was illustrated by Titus Lunter, a prolific artist within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. Lunter aimed to capture the unsettling, creature-feature atmosphere typical of the setting, depicting the bat as both a messenger and a biological curiosity. The Double Feature treatment, characterized by its grayscale frames and silver-foil touches, was generally received by the community as a bold stylistic departure that leaned heavily into the nostalgic, eerie tone of the Innistrad narrative.
