What it does

When this enchantment enters, you become the monarch.

At the beginning of your upkeep, any number of target players each mill two cards. If you're the monarch, each of those players mills ten cards instead. (To mill a card, a player puts the top card of their library into their graveyard.)

A throne built on wisdom cannot be toppled.

Provenance

Where it came from

Court of Cunning was released in 2020 as part of the Commander Legends set, the first booster set specifically designed for the multiplayer Commander format. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the card was intended to provide a thematic, high-impact enchantment that encouraged interaction through the 'monarch' mechanic, which forces players to compete for control of the throne to gain card advantage.

The illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who utilized a regal and slightly ominous aesthetic to reflect the political intrigue inherent to the black-aligned cards of the set. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its ability to generate significant board pressure and its unique capacity to mill opponents, cementing its place as a staple in various deck archetypes focused on graveyard synergy and forced interaction.
