Cranial Plating

Cranial Plating was introduced in the 2004 expansion set Fifth Dawn, the third and final installment of the Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set explored themes of artifact synergy and metal-based mechanics, reflecting the artificial, metallic nature of the plane of Mirrodin. Designed as an uncommon card, it quickly became a staple in constructed formats due to its ability to turn small artifact creatures into significant combat threats by granting them a power boost based on the number of artifacts controlled.

The card features artwork by Kev Walker, a prolific illustrator whose gritty, detailed style helped define the aesthetic of the Mirrodin era. Walker’s depiction captures the invasive, biomechanical essence of the plane, illustrating the armor as a parasitic or integrated technological enhancement. Upon its release, the card was received as a highly efficient equipment piece, eventually proving so powerful in various competitive formats that it became a defining element of artifact-themed decks across the history of the game.
