Provenance

Where it came from

Solarion was released in 2004 as part of the Fifth Dawn expansion, the concluding set in the Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to focus on artifacts and introduced a unique keyword, sunburst, which allowed cards to scale in power based on the variety of mana colors spent to cast them. Solarion was specifically crafted to leverage this mechanic, serving as a modular creature that could grow significantly in stats if the player managed to achieve a five-color mana base.

The card was illustrated by artist Matt Cavotta, who contributed significantly to the aesthetic of the Mirrodin plane. His depiction of Solarion aimed to capture the cold, metallic, and crystalline nature of the world’s inhabitants. Upon its release, the card was viewed primarily as a functional utility piece for limited formats and multi-color casual decks, noted for its design as a scalable threat that rewarded players for complex deck construction.
