Where it came from
Cream of the Crop was released in 2008 as part of the Morningtide expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a green enchantment, the card was designed to synergize with the set's tribal themes, specifically rewarding players for controlling creatures that shared a common type. It reflects the set's focus on class-based mechanics, which emphasized the profession or role of the creatures on the battlefield rather than just their species.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who employed his signature painterly style to capture the essence of woodland growth and botanical abundance. The design sought to visually represent the concept of 'culling' the best from one's deck, and it was received by players as a niche but effective tool for combo-oriented decks that relied on stacking the top of the library to manipulate future draws.
